John Chapter 2 (Expounded)

John Chapter 02

1) And the third day... after the baptism of Yahushua, who now had five students/pupils/disciples... there was a marriage in Cana... a small village in the area of Galilee...; and the mother of Yahushua was there;

2) And Yahushua was invited, and his followers, to the marriage.

3) And when they wanted wine, the mother of Yahushua said to Him: They have no wine.

4) Yahushua said to her: Woman, what do I have to do with you? My appointed time has not yet arrived.

5) His mother said to the servants: Do whatever he tells you to do.

6) And there were six stone waterpots set in place within the house, for the purpose of the ritual washing which the Jews do before and after meals, containing two or three firkins... these six stone water pots held about 18-27 gallons... apiece.

"firkin" 3355 metretes {met-ray-tace'} - a measurer... a measure of capacity... indicating, in this case, the Attic amphora, which was a measure for liquids equivalent to about 33.5 quarts, or, about 8 and three eighths gallons. The Roman amphora was smaller; and equal to two-thirds of the metretes.

7) Yahshua said to the servants: Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled the containers up to the brim.

8) And he said to them: Draw some out now and take it to the governor of the feast... 755 archittiklinos {ar-khee-tree'-klee-nos} - the table master... the superintendant of the dining room... And they did so.

9) Although the servants who had poured the water into the stone containers knew, the ruler of the feast did not know where the wine had come from when he had tasted of the water which had been changed into wine; and the governor of the feast then called the bridegroom to his side

10) And said to him: Every man serves the good wine at the beginning; and, when men have become drunk the the lesser quality wine is then served; but, you have kept the good wine until now.

11) Yahushua did this beginning of miracles in a village of Galilee called Cana... 2580 {kan-ah'} - "a place of reeds"... which is about five miles NW of Nazareth ... and caused His splendor... and He caused the Truth of Who and What He is, which had been hidden until that time..., to become plainly and openly recognized; and his followers believed in Him.

12) After this, He went down to Capernaum... 2584 Kapernaoum {cap-er-nah-oom'} - "village of comfort"... a flourishing city of Galilee on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee, or, Lake of Genneseret, near where the Jordan River flows into the lake... He was accompanied by His mother, His brothers, and His disciples: and they stayed there for a few days.

13) And the time of the Jews' passover was soon going to take place, and Yahushua went to Yerushalem;

14) And He discovered, in the temple, those who sold oxen, sheep, and doves; and those that brokered the livestock and loaned money for the purpose of these sales.

15) And when He had made a scourge... 5416 phragellion {frag-el'-le-on} - a multi-tendrilled whip of small diameter ropes woven from rushes... rushes are a hollow stemmed grasslike marsh herb used for weaving mats, baskets, etc..., he drove them all out of the temple, along with the sheep and the oxen, and poured out the bankers money and turned the tables over where this business had been done;

16) And He said to those who sold doves: Take these things out of here, do not make my Fathers' house a house of merchandise.

17) And Yahushuas' disciples remembered that it was written: The zeal of your house has eaten me up

*** Ps.69:9 For the zeal of your house... the zeal that comes from the nature of your household, my father..., has eaten me up... has consumed me...; and the reproaches... and the scorn... the mockeries and taunts... the disgraces... of those who had reproached you... of those who had taunted, scorned and mocked you, father,... are fallen... are thrown down... upon me

18) Then, because of this; and in answer to His actions and His statement concerning the temple being His Father's house, those there at the time who were of the ruling religious order of the Jews demanded to know from Yahushua: What sign can you show to us that sets you apart from all of us and gives you the authority to do these things?... What can you show to us as a sign from heaven that makes you any better than we are in the sight of G_d... Ha Shem... we dare not say His name...; and gives you the right to raise yourself up above us and tell us how to conduct ourselves...?

19) Yahushua answered and said: Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up again in three days.

20) Then, those who were of the ruling religious order of the Jews said: It took forty-six years to build this temple and you are going to raise it up in three days?

21) But, none of them understood that Yahushua spoke concerning the temple of His body.

22) When, consequently, He arose from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this to them; and they then believed the scripture and the words which Yahushua had said to them.

23) Now, when He was in Yerushalem during the Feast of Passover, many believed on His name... on His reputation; and on His claim of the origin of the nature of the power and authority that was caused to be remembered at the mention or memory of His name... when they saw the miracles which He did.

24) But, Yahushua placed no confidence in them, because He knew all... Yahushua did not place any real confidence in the belief of these people at that time because He knew all things that were in their hearts... He understood the nature of what was in the seat and center of their thinking, feeling and decision making capabilities; and He knew that they were placing confidence and trust in what their experiences told them according to their nature as part of mankind, which is earthly and sensual; and not according to the Spirit of Yahweh and His Order...

25) And, He did not have a need that any of mankind should testify of Him... He did not need any part of mankind to bear witness and affirm His nature and identity because of what they may have seen, heard, or experienced of Him or His actions...; because He knew what was in man... Because He knew that any perceptions of Who and What He is; and His purpose and business, would not be comprehended accurately by any who are a part of the order and nature of mankind...
